I knew it and you knew it. Metal Gear Solid 4 was always going to sell big upon its release, but how big was anybody’s guess. Well it is now known that it has become the second fastest selling game of all time in the UK.

Although the title had sold more than Gran Turismo 5 in its first week and is number one in the charts, it still could not move the almighty Grand Theft Auto from its record breaking position.

Below is a complete run down on the chart as it stands now:-

Sony confirms that MGS4 and the PS3 will be bundled in another limited edition package.

Sony today confirmed that on June 12th, Metal Gear 4 day, a new Sony PS3 bundle will be released including the 40Gb PS3, a wireless controller, and a copy of Metal Gear Solid.

The creation of such bundles has proven a fine marketing move by Sony in recent years and the release of the Grand Theft Auto IV version last week was yet another step in this fine tradition.

However with the advent of MGS, Sony has a real chance to hit the XBox 360 where it hurts thanks to the exclusivity of the game on PlayStation only.

Keep your eyes peeled, make a note of the date, and of course (you shouldn’t need reminding) but pre-order your copy of Metal Gear (hurry to save £15 on the retail price)

European users of the PS3 are currently experiencing another downloading disaster with the online beta-trial of Metal Gear Solid 4.

European users of the PS3 are currently experiencing another downloading disaster with the online beta-trial of Metal Gear Solid 4.

The beta test was launched yesterday on the PlayStation network.

First off, the download was slow however worse was to follow. Immediately upon installing, an update was required to version 1.01 which was took me, on a fast connection, over an hour to download. Many PS3 users have also complained that in some cases the update was halted half-way through.

Quite frankly, it is appalling that you can download an item only just added to the store and immediately it requires an update. It happened with Gran Turismo and it’s happened again. If you are downloading from the store you should be downloading the LATEST version. Simple.

Worse was to follow. To play the trial, which was originally planned to begin on Monday, you need to sign up for a free Konami ID and Game ID. For many PS3 users this simply isn’t working. You are connected to the relevant web page but users either can’t connect, or cannot complete their registration due to timeouts.

The whole thing has been poorly thought through. Surely Sony, and Konami, must realise the kind of numbers of people who will want to download this demo and then, obviously, register an ID.

Doubts are already being raised that the game’s online features will simply not be ready in time for the June launch date, which may now possibly be put back yet again.

How are you doing with it? Have you downloaded your Konami ID yet? Let us know in the forum

The long awaited, supposedly final episode in the Meta Gear Solid series will find its way into gamers hands this coming June 12th.

What’s it all about?

The long awaited, supposedly final episode in the Meta Gear Solid series will find its way into gamers hands this coming June 12th. Directed by Hideo Kojima, Shuyo Murata and Yoji Shinkawa, this title has been nased on the theme of ‘no place to hide’, which finds the man himself ‘Solid Snake’ doing what he does best by using stealth and a variety of hiding techniques. Snake has now been issued with a new special suit ‘Octocamo’, which can alter its texture to match that of its surroundings. This new feature will come in handy as Snake will find himself in many more situations this time where it will be hard to stay out of sight.

Snake will supposedly be able to interrogate guards this time, instead of just knocking them out, which should bring an extra element of strategy to the game. The regular binoculars that players are used to having are now replaced with a monocular eye piece called ‘Solid Eye’ , and the always funny cardboard box has also been replaced with an oil drum, which can deflect bullets and can be used to knock over guards simply by rolling into them.

Snake will not be alone this time on the battle field as this time he will have a robotic side kick / assistant known as ‘Metal Gear Mk II’, which snake can use to communicate with other characters in the game, and can also used to take down enemies by giving them an electric shock.

The game is set in the year 2014, which is five years after the set piece of Metal Gear Solid 2. It takes place in a world where private military companies (PMC’s) are needed to fight wars mainly for money and business purposes. The introduction of nanotechnology plays a large role in this game by having been incorporated into many of the soldiers, which allows them to be in sync with each other as if they were one, while at the same time enhancing the typical abilities of the average soldier by many times whilst always keeping their loyalty in check. This time Solid Snake is showing the effects that war has had over the years as he is looking old and tired, and sadly this may be the last time that he is sent in to ‘save the world’, although we will only find out once we get to play this surely monumental game.
